Story by Jack Foley

BILLY Connolly is the latest actor to join the cast of Peter Jackson’s two-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.

The Scottish actor and comedian will play the key role of Dain Ironfoot, a great dwarf warrior and cousin of Thorin Oakenshield.

The casting news was revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, which received a statement from Jackson saying: “We could not think of a more fitting actor to play Dain Ironfoot, the staunchest and toughest of Dwarves, than Billy Connelly, the Big Yin himself.

“With Billy stepping into this role, the cast of The Hobbit is now complete. We can’t wait to see him on the Battlefield!”

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is due to be released in cinemas on December 14 with the second film, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, set to follow on December 13, 2013.

Martin Freeman stars as Bilbo Baggins while former Lord of the Rings luminaries Sir Ian McKellen, as Gandalf, Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Elijah Wood, Orlando Bloom and Andy Serkis are all reprising their roles.
