DISNEY CEO Bob Iger has been revealing a little more about the plans for the forthcoming Han Solo spin-off movie, as well as what lies in store for the Star Wars franchise beyond Episode IX.

Speaking in an interview with his wife, Willow Bay, newly named Dean of USC Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism, Iger said that Disney has already started talking about what could happen after Episode IX and alluded to the possibility of “another decade-and-a-half of Star Wars stories”.

He didn’t elaborate any further.

However, Iger did discuss the death of Carrie Fisher and its potential impact on the franchise going forward, maintaining that it would not affect the forthcoming Episode VIII, aka The Last Jedi.

He continued: “We had to deal with tragedy at the end of 2016. Carrie appears throughout VIII. We are not changing VIII to deal with her passing. Her performance remains as it is in VIII. In Rogue One, we had some digital character. We are not doing that with Carrie.”

Commenting on the young Han Solo movie, Iger went on to say that the film – which has still yet to be given an official name – will span the beloved character’s years from age 18 to 24.

Han (to be played by Alden Ehrenreich) will meet Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) and will also be seen finding his ship, The Millennium Falcon.

In other related Iger news, Disney announced he would extend his tenure as CEO until July 2, 2019.

The young Han Solo movie also stars Donald Glover as a young Lando Calrissian, as well as Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson in a mentor role, Thandie Newton, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller will direct the film, which is due to be released on May 25, 2018.

The Last Jedi, from writer-director Rian Johnson, opens on December 15 this year.

Iger’s comments were made at the Scale: The Future of Tech and Entertainment conference, which was held in Santa Monica.
