BOBBY Cannavale (of Boardwalk Empire fame) and John Slattery (Mad Men) are among several new stars to join the cast of Marvel’s Ant-Man as production officially gets underway in San Francisco.

They will also be joined by rapper T.I. and Judy Greer (of Archer fame).

Peyton Reed (replacing first choice Edgar Wright) is directing the superhero movie, which stars Paul Rudd as the title character – a superhero who can shrink while increasing in strength.

Michael Douglas is also on board as his mentor, Dr Hank Pym, while Evangeline Lilly is playing Pym’s daughter.

Corey Stoll (The Strain, House of Cards) has also previously joined the film as the villain Yellowjacket. But other new additions include Abby Ryder Fortson, Wood Harris and Gregg Turkington.

Based on the Marvel comic character first published in 1962, the film follows con-man Scott Lang (Rudd) as he embraces his inner-hero and helps his mentor, Dr Pym (Douglas) protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats.

Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.

Ant-Man is scheduled to be released on July 17, 2015, and is one of several films on Marvel’s busy release schedule for the next few years. The keenly anticipated Avengers: Age of Ultron will debut on May 1, 2015, Captain America 3 follows on May 6, 2016, while Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is currently scheduled for release on July 28, 2017.
