Bond's new girl will be Eva Green

Bond Girl

Story by Jack Foley

EVA Green, the French star of The Dreamers and Kingdom of Heaven, has been confirmed as James Bond’s new girl in Casino Royale.

The 25-year-old actress will play femme fatale Vesper Lynd in the eagerly-anticipated film, lining up alongside Daniel Craig in his first outing as 007.

News of the casting came just 24 hours after Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen was unveiled as new Bond villain, Le Chiffre. Jeffrey Wright has also been revealed as the new face of CIA agent, Felix Leiter (who has appeared on several occasions throughout the years).

Green first broke through in the 2003 Bernardo Bertolucci sexually explicit film, The Dreamers, about a French brother and sister who befriend a young American during the Paris riots of 1968.

She went on to appear in Ridley Scott’s epic, Kingdom of Heaven, alongside Orlando Bloom last year.

Commenting on her casting in Casino Royale, Sony chairman Amy Pascal said: “Vesper is a pivotal role in Casino Royale and it takes much more than beauty to make this role work. When you think about the great James Bond adventures, of course you think about action and espionage, but you need to have palpable sexual tension in the movie and in casting Vesper, we really needed to up the ante, because this character is very much an equal to Bond and central to our story.”

Green joins a long list of actresses who have become Bond babes, from Ursula Andress in Dr No to Halle Berry in Die Another Day.

Casino Royale marks the first 007 outing since Die Another Day in 2002, which marked Pierce Brosnan’s last outing as James Bond, and which took $425 million worldwide. Audiences this time around are promised a tougher, grittier version of 007 that goes back to basics.
