Captain America 3 to go head-to-head with Superman versus Batman

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

THE third Captain America movie will go head-to-head with Zack Snyder’s still untitled Superman vs Batman movie in the summer of 2015.

According to sources quoted by The Hollywood Reporter, Disney and Marvel have set May 6, 2016 as the release date for the third slice of Captain America… thereby creating a superhero smackdown at the box office.

However, there is room for Disney to change its mind as the distributor also has July 8 pencilled in for a release date for another of its titles. However, the smart money is on Captain America being given an early summer slot in keeping with its strong track record of opening superhero tentpoles at the start of the blockbuster season.

Iron Man 3 became a runaway success in 2013, while Avengers Assemble became another of the highest grossing films of all time in 2012. What’s more, the second Captain America film, The Winter Soldier, is expected to benefit from the continuing Avengers ‘halo effect’ when it opens in cinemas this March/April.

Brothers Anthony and Joe Russo have directed Winter Soldier and are in talks to return for Captain America 3.

Even though the first Captain America: The First Avenger was one of the lesser performing Marvel franchise starters, taking in $371 million worldwide, compared to, say, the $668 million that Man of Steel took last summer, box office trackers predict that its sequel is in with a chance of matching the $641 million grossed worldwide by fellow Marvel sequel Thor: The Dark World late last year.

And that would leave the third film well poised to take on Superman vs Batman, which pits Henry Cavill’s man of steel against Ben Affleck’s ageing caped crusader. Let battle commence…
