BRITISH actor Charlie Hunnam has landed the leading role in Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim.

The film is the project del Toro opted to focus on when pulling out of The Hobbit and once his adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s At The Mountains of Madness fell apart over budgetary issues.

It takes the form of a monster movie that finds aliens threatening the Earth after landing and attacking cities and nations neighbouring the Pacific Ocean.

In order to fight back, humans develop giant robots to fight them off.

It is reportedly influenced by mecha, the Japanese genre involving humans piloting robotic constructs.

Hunnam, who has shot to US prominence as one of the stars of FX’s Sons of Anarchy, is in talks to play the human lead, a pilot described as one of the mechas that needs to climb back into the driver’s chair.
