CHARLIZE Theron is reportedly one of the front-runners to land the role of the main villain in Fast & Furious 8.

The South African actress is currently riding high off the acclaim surrounding her performance in Mad Max: Fury Road in which she enjoyed joint billing with Tom Hardy’s character in the post apocalyptic chase movie.

She is also reported to be taking a role originally intended for Brad Pitt in The Gray Man, a thriller about a CIA operative-turned-assassin.

The eighth film in the Fast & Furious franchise is picking up speed. Straight Outta Compton’s F Gary Gray has been lined up to direct, while series regulars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson are all expected to return – as is Jason Statham, who played the big bad in Fast & Furious 7.

New York will also be one of the new shooting locations, while Cuba is also being lined up.

In related Fast & Furious news, star and producer Vin Diesel also confirmed last week that the street-racing saga will stretch to 10 movies.

At present, the schedule is as follows: Fast 8 will hit cinemas on April 14, 2017, with Fast & Furious 9 following on 19 April, 2019, and final episode Fast & Furious 10 rounding things off on April 2, 2021.

Fast & Furious 7 has made $1.516 billion at the global box office and has entered the all-time box office Top 10.
