CHRISTOPHER McQuarrie is to direct the fifth Mission: Impossible movie.

The appointment was confirmed by star Tom Cruise himself, when he Tweeted: “MISSION ACCEPTED! It’s OFFICIAL! @ChrisMcquarrie is the director of #MissionImpossible 5! #TeamTC”

McQuarrie, who won an Oscar for his screenplay The Usual Suspects in 1996, has worked with Cruise on a number of occasions, the most recent of which was directing last year’s Jack Reacher.

He also penned the script for Cruise’s Valkyrie and helped to advise on the last Mission: Impossible movie.

Iron Man 3 screenwriter Drew Pearce has been hired to work on the screenplay for the latest instalment, which follows the Brad Bird directed Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, which has grossed almost $700 million (£450 million) worldwide since opening in December 2011.

Cruise announced in May that he would reprise his role as Ethan Hunt in the franchise.
