Christopher Nolan finished with Batman as The Dark Knight Rises gets standing ovation

Christopher Nolan, director of The Prestige

Story by Jack Foley

CHRISTOPHER Nolan has said that he is finished with Batman as the third and final film in his trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, got a standing ovation from an early advance screening.

Speaking at press junkets in Los Angeles, the British filmmaker said he has no plans for anymore Batman films, which also meant distancing himself from any potential Justice League creation.

“I’ve got no plans to do anything more, and certainly no involvement with any Justice League project,” he told the Associated Press.

“We’re finished with all we’re doing with Batman,” he continued. “This is the end of our take on this character.”

Referencing Warner Bros previously announced intention to reboot the Batman franchise following The Dark Knight Rises, much in the same way that Sony successfully did with The Amazing Spider-Man, Nolan added:

“Batman will outlive us all, and our interpretation was ours. Obviously, we consider it definitive and kind of finished.

“The great thing about Batman is he lives on for future generations to re-interpret, and obviously, Warners will have to decide in the future what they’re going to do with him. We’ve had our say on the character.”

The final part of Nolan’s comments would also appear to rule himself out of any potential producing role in future films… contrary to what Warner Bros. Pictures president Jeff Robinov had said earlier this year when he announced that the director would be returning in that producer capacity.

Nevertheless, if The Dark Knight Rises truly is Nolan’s final bow with the Batman character, he appears to be going out on the highest of highs.

A special weekend screening for 40 to 50 fanboys and bloggers held in America at the weekend saw many take to Twitter and Facebook to post their initial reactions despite being told not to publish reviews until the day before the film’s official release on July 20.

“YouTube reviewer” Lauren Hiestand (@nickcarterroxs) wrote on Twitter: “The Dark Knight Rises has just finished screening for the press and critics, receiving a STANDING OVATION!!!”

Another fan, Tom McAuliffe (@tommcauliffe) added: “So much awesome … can’t wait to see it again. And again. And 9 out of 10 for me. I’d put Amazing Spider-Man at a 7.5 and Avengers at an 8.5.”

Vince Peluso wrote on Facebook: “Wow quite speechless at the moment … It was everything I wanted it to be. Some fans will find certain aspects controversial, but in my eyes everything in the film fit the overall scheme of this instalment and the series in general, and Nolan really couldn’t have made it any more epic.”

Some comments have since been removed but the early reaction has only fuelled the hunger to see the film, which is already tracking to open better than The Dark Knight and possibly better than Marvel Avengers Assemble.

All will be revealed on July 20.
