ANIMATED sequel Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 has shot to the top of the US box office with a strong $35 million.
The figures mark the fourth biggest September opening of all time following Hotel Transylvania, which rolled out on the same weekend a year ago with $42.5 million, Insidious: Chapter 2, which opened to $40.3 million two weeks ago, and Sweet Home Alabama ($35.6 million).
They also represent a boost to Sony Pictures, who have otherwise endured a summer to forget following box office flops with White House Down, After Earth and The Smurfs 2.
Commenting on the success, Sony worldwide president of distribution Rory Bruer said: “People love this franchise. As good as it will be here, it will even be bigger internationally. The film is a big hit for us and has something for the huge family.”
Cloudy 2‘s success was the one big win for new releases over the weekend as other freshman titles struggled.
Ron Howard’s Formula One drama Rush, based on the rivalry between James Hunt and Niki Lauda, only managed $10.3 million to land third spot behind holdover title Prisoners, which took $11.3 million in its second weekend.
Paula Patton comedy Baggage Claim landed fourth with $9.3 million. The film follows a woman who embarks on a 30,000-mile expedition to convince a suitor to marry her so that she isn’t the only single person in her family.
And Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut Don Jon, which he also wrote and stars in, debuted to $9 million for fifth spot.
