COLIN Farrell and Rachel Weisz have joined the cast of sci-fi romance The Lobster.

To be directed by Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, the film is described by Variety as “an unconventional love story” that’s set in a troubled future where finding a partner is literally a matter of life and death.

The film, which marks the director’s sixth feature, also stars Ben Whishaw, Léa Seydoux and Olivia Colman.

It will mark his first in the English language and is due to start shooting in Ireland at the end of March.

Lanthimos himself commented: “I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to work with such great actors. Their contribution to our film will enrich and expand the world we are trying to create and explore. Furthermore, our team of old and new collaborators makes me very confident and excited to start making this film.”

Lanthimos has previously been Oscar nominated for his 2009 drama Dogtooth (in the best foreign language film category). His most recent feature, Alps, premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2011.
