Colin Firth's West Memphis Three biopic gets funding

The King's Speech

Story by Jack Foley

COLIN Firth’s West Memphis Three biopic has secured funding at Cannes, meaning the star vehicle can now press ahead.

The film, to be directed by Atom Egoyan, is called Devil’s Knot and co-stars Reese Witherspoon.

It’s based on the 2002 best-seller by investigative journalist Mara Leveritt about the murders of three eight-year-old boys and the conviction of three teenagers accused of killing them as part of a satanic ritual.

In August 2011, the defendants were released due to a lack of evidence after spending 18 years in prison.

Actual defendants Jessie Misskelley Jr. and Jason Baldwin are executive producing the film, while New York-based motion picture production and investment company Worldview Entertainment will finance and produce the project.

The case of the West Memphis Three has already spawned several documentaries, including the Peter Jackson produced West of Memphis, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January.

With funding now in place, shooting is due to commence on location in Georgia in June.
