Colin Firth set to join Mary Poppins sequel

Story by Jack Foley

COLIN Firth is the latest name to be linked to Disney’s forthcoming Mary Poppins sequel.

The Oscar-winning actor is in talks to take the role of William Weatherall Wilkins of the Fidelity Fiduciary Bank, at which George Banks, the children’s father, worked n the first film.

Set 25 years after the events of the original, Mary Poppins Returns will take place in the depressed Britain of the 1930s, when Michael and Jane Banks (played by Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer) have grown up and receive a surprise visit from their former nanny (to be played by Emily Blunt).

If successful, Firth would join an ensemble cast that further includes Meryl Streep as Poppins’ cousin, Topsy and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will play a street lamplighter called Jack.

The name of Firth’s potential character is taken from the short story The Marble Boy, which appears in PL Travers’s third collection of Mary Poppins stories, Mary Poppins Opens the Door.

Mary Poppins Returns is scheduled for release on Christmas Day 2018.
