Daniel Radcliffe to play Sebastian Coe

The Woman in Black

Story by Jack Foley

DANIEL Radcliffe is to play Sebastian Coe in a new film about the athlete’s rivalry with fellow Olympian Steve Ovett.

Gold will reunite the former Harry Potter star with director James Watkins, with whom he worked on 2012’s The Woman in Black.

The film, which has been adapted from Pat Butcher’s book The Perfect Distance by Oscar winner Simon Beaufoy and Will Davies, chronicles the runners’ rivalry in the run-up to the 1980 Olympics in Moscow, which saw Coe clinch victory in the 1,500m and Ovett pick up gold in the 800m.

It is not yet known who will play Ovett in the production.

Beaufoy, who won an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire in 2009, has previously told the BBC that the film offered “a brilliant story” with a “perfect end”.

The film is a co-production between BBC Films and the British Film Institute as well as AL Films.

BBC Films’ Christine Langan, who is also serving as executive producer, commented: “Compelling, funny and moving, Gold is a gem of a story.”

Production is due to commence in the UK and Russia in April next year (2014).

Radcliffe will shortly be seen in UK cinemas in Kill Your Darlings, in which he plays the beat poet Allen Ginsbgerg.
