DARTH Vader is to appear in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, it has been confirmed.

According to US publication Entertainment Weekly, the spin-off will reveal “never-before-seen characters while also re-introducing a few classic ones”. It adds: “We’re confirming a big one on our cover: the galactic man in black himself, Darth Vader.”

The news confirms what many fans had hoped for and raises excitement still higher for the film, which is set just before A New Hope – the original film in the series.

It stars British actress Felicity Jones as rebel Jyn Erso, who finds herself accused of a string of convictions for forgery, assault and theft.

After being captured, she’s sent on a mission to help investigate “a major weapons test”, which turns out to be the Death Star in development, and subsequently has to find a way to destroy it.

Joining her in the cast will be Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen and Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, as well as Australian actor Ben Mendelsohn, who will play a new villain named Director Krennic.

The article states that Krennic has “Vader looming in the background over his shoulder, making sure that he gets the job done”.

As yet, it hasn’t been revealed which actor will play Vader in Rogue One – James Earl Jones, who’s now 85, voiced the character in the original trilogy, while 80-year-old David Prowse wore the iconic cape and helmet.

Rogue One will be released in cinemas in December 2016.

It follows the success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which made more than $2bn (£1.3bn) worldwide.
