David Arquette to reprise role as Dewey Riley in Scream relaunch

Story by Jack Foley

DAVID Arquette is to reprise his role as the loveable detective Dewey Riley in the relaunch of horror franchise Scream.

The actor, who played the role in the previous four outings of the genre-skewing horror movie series, is the first of the original cast members to confirm his return.

However, Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter who originated the franchise, has returned for the re-launch and is executive producing – although, crucially, not writing.

That task is being left to James Vanderbilt, whose credits range from Adam Sandler’s Netflix yarn Murder Mystery to David Fincher’s Zodiac, and Guy Busick, who co-wrote Radio Silence’s sleeper horror hit Ready or Not.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, of the filmmaking group Radio Silence, are on board to direct, making it the first of the franchise entries that will not be helmed by late horror master Wes Craven.

At this stage, no plot details are being given away. But with the return of Dewey now confirmed and news that the producers are in talks with Neve Campbell about a possible comeback for her main character, it would seem that the relaunch will have some ties to the originals.

Commenting on his return, Arquette said: “I am thrilled to be playing Dewey again and to reunite with my Scream family, old and new. Scream has been such a big part of my life, and for both the fans and myself, I look forward to honouring Wes Craven’s legacy.”

Principal photography is hoping to being later this year in Wilmington, North Carolina, when safety protocols surrounding the coronavirus pandemic are in place.

In their own statement, Radio Silence said: “It’s impossible to fully express how much Wes Craven’s work and the Scream movies in particular mean to us as fans and have influenced us as storytellers. Kevin Williamson’s incredible stories have entertained and inspired us for decades and we’re insanely honoured to have the opportunity to be a part of the cinematic world Wes and Kevin so brilliantly created together. Jamie and Guy’s amazing script does that legacy justice and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter of Scream to life.”
