David Lowery to direct live-action Peter Pan for Disney

Story by Jack Foley

DAVID Lowery is to direct a live-action adaptation of Peter Pan for Disney.

The director is already helming a remake of Disney’s Pete’s Dragon, featuring Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford and Karl Urban.

Peter Pan will be based on the timeless JM Barrie novel and has been adapted for the screen by Toby Hallbrooks.

It continues Disney’s current penchant for bringing some of its classic animations to life, following the success of Cinderella, Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland and – most recently – The Jungle Book.

Indeed, Disney’s 1953 animated take on the JM Barrie book remains the most successful adaptation of the novel about the boy who cannot age and his battle with Captain Hook.

Other attempts to bring the story to the screen include Sony’s live action Hook, starring Robin Williams and directed by Steven Spielberg, which under-performed in 1991, and last year’s Hugh Jackman starring Pan, which bombed.

Lowery, who made his directorial debut with the excellent Ain’t Them Bodies Saints is also developing The Old Man and the Gun, which also features Robert Redford.
