Deadpool 2, The New Mutants and Gambit get new release dates

Story by Jack Foley

THE X-Men universe has been given a release date shake-up by Twentieth Century Fox, with Deadpool 2, The New Mutants and Gambit all moving.

The good news is that Deadpool 2, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2016 Ryan Reynolds smash, is moving forward by two weeks, from June 1 to May 18, 2018.

That means that Deadpool now gets the jump, by a week, on Disney’s Solo: A Star Wars Story, especially since second weekends on Star Wars movies are traditionally very strong.

For those awaiting The New Mutants, however, the news wasn’t so good.

Josh Boone’s horror-tinged take on Marvel’s teen heroes, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams and Charlie Heaton, has been pushed back 10 months. The movie is jumping from April 13, 2018, to February 22, 2019.

According to insiders quoted by The Hollywood Reporter the decision has been taken to avoid having an overlap with X-Men movies in various overseas markets, where Mutants and Deadpool 2 would be in cinemas at the same time.

Finally, Gambit is seeing its release date move from February 14, 2019, to June 7, 2019. Insiders suggest that studio chiefs reckon the Channing Tatum vehicle will do better as a summer Marvel movie.
