Deadpool scores one of top Marvel opening days of all time in UK

Story by Jack Foley

SUPERHERO movie Deadpool has scored one of the top Marvel opening days of all-time in the UK.

The 15 certificate film, starring Ryan Reynolds, opened to $3.4 million on Wednesday (February 10), which marks the fifth-biggest opening day for a Marvel title despite its higher certification.

It also marks the biggest opening figure for a Fox release that is rated 15.

In IMAX cinemas in the British Isles the news was even better – the film scored the second-highest Wednesday opening behind James Bond movie Spectre.

In the UK and France, Deadpool came in well ahead of 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Elsewhere across the globe, the film performed similarly well. In Australia, the film took $2.1 million and commanded 75% of the market, while in France the opening day total stands at $1.8 million.

Deadpool even broke records in Taiwan, where it took in $1.4 million, the biggest opening day ever for a Fox release there; and it opened to $650,000 in Hong Kong, the top gross ever for the Chinese New Year holidays, the top Fox opening day of all time and the top IMAX opening day of all time.

All eyes now turn to the US, over the long Valentine’s Day and Presidents Day weekend, where Fox is suggesting it could hit $65 million for the four days, while others suggest it could even cross $70 million. A sequel is already in the works.
