Dick Van Dyke to appear in Mary Poppins Returns

Story by Jack Foley

VETERAN performer Dick Van Dyke has confirmed that he will appear in the upcoming sequel to Mary Poppins.

The 91-year-old played chimney sweep Bert in the original 1964 movie and now looks set to revisit the role in Disney’s forthcoming Mary Poppins Returns, which stars Emily Blunt in the title role.

He told The Hollywood Reporter: “This one supposedly takes place 20 years later and the kids are all grown up. It’s a great cast – Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury and that guy from Hamilton [Lin-Manuel Miranda].”

The official synopsis for the film states that the story will see Poppins revisit an older Jane and Michael Banks and Michael’s three children in the aftermath of a “personal loss” in Depression-hit London.

Rob Marshall is directing the film, which is currently scheduled for release on Christmas Day 2018.

As part of the same interview with the industry publication, Dyke went on to say that he has no plans to retire from acting or entertaining.

“I think it’s the worst thing you can do. Certain people who do retire suddenly age. I think you have to stay active.”
