DISNEY has confirmed that a long-awaited sequel to animated hit Wreck-It Ralph will be released in cinemas on March 9, 2018.

The film’s original director Rich Moore and screenwriter Phil Johnston made the announcement via a Facebook Live video on the Disney page.

John C. Reilly, who voiced Ralph, will also return once again, as will Sarah Silverman, who played the wise-cracking Vanellope von Schweetz.

Released in 2012, Wreck-It Ralph saw the misunderstood villain of an eight-bit video game decide to change his persona and become the “good guy”.

Plot details for the follow-up remain sketchy, particularly as the video announcement dropped no hints about story or character. However, in a recent interview with Collider, Moore talked about how the sequel will see Ralph break the internet.

Moore and Johnston recently worked together on Walt Disney’s last animation release, Zootropolis, and will continue their partnership for the video game-inspired sequel.

In addition to the release date for Wreck-It Ralph 2, Disney also confirmed that their next animated release Moana, the South Pacific-set adventure story about a young Polynesian girl and the ancient demi-god Maui, will hit cinemas on November 23 of this year in the US.

The studio also has the Jack and the Beanstalk re-telling Gigantic due to open in November 2018.
