Disney's Monsters Inc takes over Blackpool Beach for world record
Story by Jack Foley
ARTISTS from Disney’s Cinemagic team earned a place in the history books when they took part in a record breaking picture stunt on Blackpool Beach on Friday, July 4, 2008.
The family movie channel Disney Cinemagic painstakingly created Britain’s biggest piece of beach art with a monster size picture of Sulley, the popular character from Monsters Inc.
The stunt was held to celebrate the start of the summer holidays and the channel’s Monster Summer, which kicks off with a screening of Monsters Inc on Sunday, July 6.
The channel commissioned a team of 10 highly skilled artists to create the sand picture of Sulley, which subsequently spanned 40,000 square feet – the equivalent of three Olympic sized swimming pools!
And it proved a battle against the elements, with the artists working from 4:30am to complete the picture before it was washed away by high tide at 11:45am.
John Lundberg, from Disney Cinemagic’s team of artists, commented: “This was always going to be a monster challenge for the team – it’s a big picture with a huge amount of detail required and it’s a tight time frame, but we were confident that we could do it!”
