Dominic Cooper’s off to hunt vampires

Dominic Cooper in Tamara Drewe

Story by Tim Carson

Dominic Cooper continues to be a busy man. Following up his dual lead role in The Devil’s Double and supporting role in Captain America: The First Avenger it seems he’s set to play Henry Sturges in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

Yes, you did read that correctly – that’s the former US president Abraham Lincoln hunting vampires. The film is based on the hit novel by Seth Grahame-Smith which tells the fictional (we think) tale of how the teenage Abe Lincoln discovered vampires killed his mother and so sets out to have his revenge on the evil blood-suckers. Sturges is Abe’s mentor and will teach him the how to hunt and kill vamps.

According to The Hollywood Reporter director Timur Bekmambetov has given the role to Tamara Drewe star Cooper and not Joaquin Phoenix who had apparently been in talks. Benjamin Walker (Flags Of Our Fathers) has already been cast as Abraham Lincoln while Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker, Eagle Eye) is rumoured to be in talks to play Lincoln’s best friend.

Bekmambetov, who directed Daywatch, Nightwatch and Wanted, told Empire: “It is not a comedy at all – it is a very entertaining, epic history lesson for millions and millions of teenagers. If you remember Nightwatch, it is maybe in the vein of that kind of movie. We are keeping the traditional look of Lincoln – the big hat and the beard. He has to be historically correct, but with a few special weapons.”

How serious he’s being we’ll have to wait and see when the 20th Century Fox film comes out in 2012.
