DONALD Glover has been cast as Lando Calrissian in the upcoming young Han Solo Star Wars spin-off.

The young actor, best known for roles in Magic Mike XXL and The Martian, will take on a role initially played by Billy Dee Williams in The Empire Strikes Back.

In that film, Calrissian shared a somewhat uneven friendship with Han Solo, having lost the starship Millennium Falcon to the smuggler and future Rebel commander in a card game. He also betrayed him to the Empire before mounting a rescue operation in Return of the Jedi.

According to Lucasfilm and StarWars.Com, which announced the casting news on Friday, the new film will show a previously unseen side of Calrissian, based on “his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld”.

Sources quoted by The Hollywood Reporter add that the film will show how the character lost the Millennium Falcon to Solo.

Co-directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the as-yet untitled Han Solo spin-off is slated for release in 2018 and has previously cast Alden Ehrenreich as Solo, playing the role made iconic by Harrison Ford.

In a statement announcing the casting of Calrissian, Miller and Lord said: “We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us.

“These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”

In addition to his film roles, Glover has attracted widespread acclaim this year for creating and starring in the FX series Atlanta.
