Dwayne Johnson is top grossing film star of 2013

GI Joe: Retaliation

Story by Jack Foley

DWAYNE Johnson has been named the top grossing actor of 2013 by Forbes magazine.

The former wrestler made $1.3 billion in total thanks to the success of drag racing sequel Fast & Furious 6 and GI Joe: Retaliation. He also appeared in Snitch and Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain.

The combined earning power of those four films helped Johnson to top the list ahead of Iron Man 3‘s Robert Downey Jr ($1.2 billion) and Steve Carell, who finished with $964 million thanks in no small part to the success of his animated hit Despicable Me 2.

Forbes produced its top 10 by tallying the worldwide box office hauls of all movies released during the past calendar year.

Johnson’s Fast & Furious 6 co-stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker came in fourth and sixth, with $887m and $789m respectively.

Diesel surpassed his late co-star because he also starred in sci-fi sequel Riddick, which proved a box office hit.

The top-grossing female star was Sandra Bullock, who came fifth overall thanks to hit films Gravity and The Heat, which helped her secure a total box office haul of $862m.

The only other actress to make the top 10 was Jennifer Lawrence, who made $700 million thanks to the success of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
