Ed Zwick to direct Jack Reacher sequel

Jack Reacher

Story by Jack Foley

ED Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz are to reunite with The Last Samurai actor Tom Cruise for the sequel to Jack Reacher.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, both men are in talks to write the new script, which will be based on the book Never Go Back, with Zwick to step behind the camera.

The film, named Reacher, will once again follow the often violent fortunes of author Lee Child’s popular central character, a former military police officer who continues to help people out.

Christopher McQuarrie wrote and directed the first movie – which caused a storm of protest once Cruise was announced as star – but is only serving as an executive producer on this one. He most recently reunited with Cruise on forthcoming summer blockbuster Mission Impossible Rogue Nation.

Zwick last directed the chess drama Pawn Sacrifice with Tobey Maguire and Liev Schreiber as masters Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky. He has also previously helmed Blood Diamond, Legends of the Fall and Glory.

Never Go Back is the 18th book in the Jack Reacher series and finds the central character finally reaching Virginia only to find that his long-awaited meeting with Susan isn’t meant to be.

Instead, he finds a new commanding officer of the 110 MP, that Susan has been arrested, and that he is about to be recalled back into the Army.
