ED Zwick has signed on to direct Tobey Maguire in a new biopic about chess legend Bobby Fischer.

Pawn Sacrifice will focus on Fischer’s rise to chess champion in the 1960s, leading up to the famous match against Soviet player Boris Spassky in 1972.

The battle of mental wits was perceived as one of the high points of the Cold War.

Maguire would play Fischer and will also produce the film.

Zwick has stepped in to replace David Fincher, who was previously attached. A script is in place, having been penned by Steven Knight – although The Hollywood Reporter has referred to it as “a current draft”.

Zwick’s last film was Love & Other Drugs with Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. He was to have made the supernatural period epic The Great Wall his next project but has postponed that in favour of Pawn Sacrifice.
