OSCAR winning actor Eddie Redmayne has emerged as an early favourite to land the leading role in Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has zeroed in on the actor, who recently dominated the awards season for his performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything.

JK Rowling, who penned the original Harry Potter books and the subsequent spin-off, is heavily involved in the project and is currently writing the script for the film version, which focuses on a fictitious author named Newton Artemis Fido Scamander who compiled a reference guide to magical beasts.

The movies will reportedly follow his adventures after he is commissioned to write the tome.

Harry Potter favourit David Yates is on board to direct the feature, which is set 70 years before the events of the Potter series.

As yet, Warners has no official comment to make on the casting rumours.

But Redmayne is a hot property off the back of his Oscar success and is already being tipped to feature prominently in next year’s awards season for his performance in The Danish Girl, a drama in which he plays transgender artist Lili Elbe.
