Eden Lake - Preview

Eden Lake

Preview by Jack Foley

AS THE latest Frightfest approaches, one of the more provocative movies in this year’s line-up promises to be Eden Lake, a thriller being billed as a “hoodie horror”.

Starring Kelly Reilly (of Mrs Henderson Presents and He Kills Coppers fame), and Thomas Turgoose (of This Is England and the upcoming Somers Town), the film is already hailed as one that’s “destined to be the most controversial and provocative British movie of the year” by the organisers of London’s annual horror festival.

Written and directed by James Watkins, co-writer of My Little Eye and writer of Outback chiller Gone and The Descent 2, Eden Lake follows the misfortunes of nursery teacher Jenny and her boyfriend Steve as they escape London for a romantic weekend away.

Steve has found an idyllic lakeside beauty spot and plans to propose to Jenny but their idyllic getaway is shattered when a gang of obnoxious kids encircle their campsite and become threatening in their behaviour.

When tempers eventually flare, the couple find themselves the victims of a sudden and violent attack, forcing them to flee for their lives and endure a chilling game of cat-and-mouse.

According to the Frightfest website, Eden Lake is “frighteningly well acted” and “uber disturbing in its horrifying content and stark imagery”.

It adds: “Bleakly unrelenting in its tapping into current concerns about out-of control youth culture, it’s a compelling and unsettling shocker marking Watkins as a major new talent.”

The film co-stars Michael Fassbender, as Steve, Jack O’Connell, as yob leader Brett, and James Burrows and, following its Frightfest bow, will be released in UK cinemas on September 12, 2008.
