Elisabeth Moss to play punk rocker in Her Smell

Story by Jack Foley

ELISABETH Moss is to play a punk rocker in drama Her Smell.

The film, directed by Alex Ross Perry, will find The Handmaid’s Tale star playing a character named Becky Something, who is described as a maniacally destructive punk rock star who pushes her relationships with bandmates, family and followers to the limit as she wages a years-long war against sobriety while attempting to re-engage the creativity that had once led her band to massive crossover success.

Perry, who also penned the screenplay, has previously worked with Moss twice before.

Production is scheduled to begin in the spring after Moss finishes shooting the second season of the Emmy-winning drama The Handmaid’s Tale, for which she won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for best actress in a drama.

In a statement, Bow and Arrow’s Matthew Perniciaro – one of the film’s producers – said: “With Her Smell, Alex has crafted another fantastic piece filled with memorable characters. The film represents his continued evolution as one of our most important emerging cinematic voices.

“We are so excited to see this story about powerful, talented, beautifully flawed yet heroically unapologetic women come to life.”

Perry’s most recent film, Golden Exits, debuted in competition at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim.

Moss is looking at a busy schedule of late. In addition to completing the sophomore season of The Handmaid’s Tale and Her Smell, the actress is also set to star in the reproductive rights drama Call Jane, which will be directed by Simon Curtis. That film is also scheduled to begin production later this year.
