ELISABETH Shue and Abigail Spencer have joined the cast of Gerard Butler surfing drama Of Men and Mavericks.

The film, which is also being produced by Butler, follows a chapter in the real-life story of young Northern Californian Jay Moriarty, a world champion surfer and adventurer who made his name surfing the Marvericks north of Half Moon Bay before being killed in a diving accident at the age of 22.

Butler is playing local surfing legend Frosty Hesson, who mentored and trained the young Moriarty, played by Jonny Weston, while Shue will play Moriarty’s mother and Spencer will play the role of Frosty’s wife.

Director Curtis Hanson is due to start shooting later this month in Northern California.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Of Men and Mavericks will examine how Moriarty’s persistence, discipline and potential transform Frosty from a reluctant mentor into a father figure.
