Elton John blasts Disney over Gnomeo & Juliet

Gnomeo & Juliet

Story by Jack Foley

ELTON John has blasted Disney for not getting behind animated hit Gnomeo & Juliet or ringing to congratulate him when it had become a box office smash.

Speaking to The Marilyn Dennis Show Tuesday, the singer – who serves as one of the film’s executive producers – said that he believed the film could have become an even bigger success had Disney really put its weight behind it and given it a bigger push.

As things stand, the film sits at the top of the UK box office and only narrowly missed out on the US No.1 spot in its third week of release. It has now taken $74.3 million States-side.

Commenting on the difficult production history of the film, which took 11 years to bring to the screen, Sir Elton said: “We fought resistance from the [Disney] studio for so long, and to be honest with you, the film has taken $75 million in America, and we haven’t had a message of congratulations from anyone within the studio..

Gnomeo and Juliet took us 11 years to make. We defied all the odds and all of the people at Disney who said, “this wouldn’t be a hit,”… and it’s the biggest hit, but it could have been a bigger hit if Disney got behind it more.”

Gnomeo & Juliet was produced by London-based Rocket Pictures, run by John, Steve Hamilton Shaw and John’s partner, David Furnish, and financed by Miramax, with the film’s animation completed at the Starz studio in Toronto.

It was distributed by Entertainment One in the UK.
