Emma Stone to play Kennedy sister in Letters From Rosemary

Emma Stone in Easy A

Story by Jack Foley

EMMA Stone is to play John F Kennedy’s lesser-known eldest sister Rose Marie “Rosemary” Kennedy in new drama Letters From Rosemary.

The film, based on a screenplay by first-time screenwriter Nick Yarborough, will reveal how Rose Marie was lobotomised at the age of 23 after developing violent mood swings that threatened to embarrass her famous family.

According to Variety, the plot will follow the events leading up to the notorious procedure, making the first-born daughter of Joseph Kennedy, Sr and Rose Fitzgerald one of the first mental health patients to undergo the controversial prefrontal lobotomy procedure in the US.

The results of the operation proved to be so disastrous that she spent the rest of her life in a facility called St Coletta of Wisconsin, having been left with a mental age of two.

The title of the film refers to the many diaries and letters written by ‘Rosemary’ during her teenage years and early 20s, which revealed a young woman who lived a full social life, attending teas, dress fittings and various social events. The letters were published in 1995 by former Kennedy family secretary Barbara Gibson.

As yet, the film does not have a director attached. But it is being backed by the Anonymous Content production company, which helped bring 2016 Oscar winners Spotlight and The Revenant to the big screen.

Stone will next be seen in Damien Chazelle’s follow-up to Whiplash, the musical romance La La Land, opposite Ryan Gosling, and has been cast in the tennis biopic Battle of the Sexes.
