Evangeline Lilly and Barry Humphries join The Hobbit

Lost, Season 2 (Evangeline Lilly as Kate)

Story by Jack Foley

EVANGELINE Lilly and Barry Humphries are the latest stars to join the cast of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit.

The director announced the news via a Facebook post today (Monday, June 20).

Lilly – best known for TV series Lost as well as The Hurt Locker and the forthcoming Real Steel – has signed on to play a new character that Jackson describes as “the Woodland Elf, Tauriel”.

“Her name means ‘daughter of Mirkwood’ and, beyond that, we must leave you guessing! (No, there is no romantic connection to Legolas.)”

The casting of Humphries, meanwhile, is most intriguing given that he’s best known as the man behind Aussie comedy character Dame Edna Everage.

He is to play the Goblin King utilising Gollum-style performance capture.

According to the latest post, Jackson has now filled pretty much all the major roles on the film.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is scheduled for release on December 14 next year, followed by The Hobbit: There and Back Again in 2013.
