EWAN McGregor is to play Batman villain Black Mask in Harley Quinn spin-off movie Birds of Prey.

The film stars Margot Robbie, reprising her Suicide Squad role of Harley Quinn, alongside a largely female-led superhero ensemble comprised of Mary Elizabeth Winstead (who will portray Huntress) and Jurnee Smollett-Bell (as Black Canary). Rosie Perez is also signed up to play Renee Montoya.

Cathy Yan is directing.

Black Mask is a relatively new addition to the Batman world, who also goes by the name of Roman Sionis, a disguise-obsessed crime lord. The character first appeared in 1985’s Batman No. 386 and has since become a recurring part of the criminal underworld in Gotham City.

Perhaps most significantly, he has played a significant role in a number of important storylines over the past three decades, with several appearances in the Batman and Catwoman comic book series.

McGregor, who recently won a Golden Globe for his performance in the third season of Fargo opposite Winstead, is also set to play the lead in Warner Bros.’ The Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep. He was most recently on the big screen in Disney’s Christopher Robin.

Birds of Prey currently has a release date of February 7, 2020.
