Fish Tank leads BIFA nominations (2009)
Story by Jack Foley
GRITTY social drama Fish Tank leads the field with eight nominations at this year’s British Independent Film Awards.
The film is in the running for best director and best screenplay for its creator, Andrea Arnold, while newcomer Katie Jarvis is up for best actress and most promising newcomer.
But Fish Tank faces tough competition from a particularly strong field this year, with Duncan Jones’ acclaimed sci-fi drama Moon also in the running with seven nominations.
An Education, Nowhere Boy and In The Loop have also bagged six nominations apiece, while Jane Campions’ Keats’ drama Bright Star has also landed four nods.
Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis will receive the Richard Harris Award for outstanding contribution to British film by an actor at the ceremony, which takes place on December 6.
The awards will be decided by a jury which this year includes actress Jodie Whittaker, actors Idris Elba and Liam Cunningham, director Sarah Gavron, producers Adrian Sturges and Anita Overland, and the head of distribution and exhibition at the UK Film Council Pete Buckingham.
