Frank Grillo to play Crossbones in Captain America sequel

FRANK Grillo is to play Crossbones in Marvel and Disney’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Described as a key villain in the Captain America universe, Crossbones was originally a leader of the Savage Crims gang in New York’s lower East Side before joining a school for criminals and going on to become a henchman of the Red Skull under the code name Crossbones.

Grillo revealed via Twitter that he had tested for the role last week and even hinted at which character he was going for, via the hashtag ‘bones’.

He will join Chris Evans, who reprises his role as Captain America, as well as Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes (who becomes the Winter Soldier assassin), Anthony Mackie (as ally The Falcon), Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders and Scarlett Johansson (all reprising their roles from The Avengers.

The sequel is being co-directed by Anthony and Joe Russo which is currently due for release on April 4, 2014 in the US.

Grillo most recently appeared in End of Watch and The Grey (pictured) and will next be seen in supporting roles in Gangster Squad and Zero Dark Thirty.
