Gareth Edwards jumps from Monsters to Godzilla

Gareth Edwards directs Monsters

Story by Jack Foley

GARETH Edwards, the director of low-budget sci-fi hit Monsters, is to direct the Godzilla reboot as his next project.

Edwards shot to prominence after writing and directing the indie Monsters, which earned him a couple of British Independent Film Awards, as well as international acclaim and recognition. The three BIFAs were for best director, best achievement in production and best technical achievement.

According to the Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog, he is now in the process of closing a deal to develop and direct the creature feature for Legendary Pictures, the company that co-produced blockbusters such as Inception and The Dark Knight.

It is not yet known what direction the new Godzilla will take, although it is expected to stay close to the Japanese source material.

Edwards’ reputation, post Monsters, has also landed him work with Timur Bekmambetov on an epic sci-fi project that he is also now writing as a directing vehicle.
