Gary Oldman joins Robocop remake

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

Story by Jack Foley

GARY Oldman has joined the cast of MGM’s remake of Robocop.

The British legend will line up alongside Joel Kinnaman in the film, which Jose Padilha – of Elite Squad fame – is directing.

Kinnaman, best known as Detective Holder in the US remake of TV series The Killing, will play the title character of a cop named Alex Murphy who is brought back from the brink of death and turned into a cyborg police officer.

Oldman has signed on to play Norton, the scientist who creates Robocop and who subsequently finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of the corporation backing the plans.

Shooting on the film is scheduled to commence in September with a view to having the film ready for release in summer 2013.

Oldman will next be seen reprising his role as Commissioner Gordon in The Dark Knight Rises and also has period crime movie Lawless in the can, which just premiered at Cannes to largely positive reviews.
