Gemma Arterton confirmed for Hansel and Gretel

Tamara Drewe

Story by Jack Foley

GEMMA Arterton has been confirmed to take the lead role in a new version of the classic fairytale Hansel and Gretel.

The British actress will line up alongside Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner in the Gary Sanchez project, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.

Described as ‘a dark action movie’, the film will pick up the fairytale siblings years after the traumatic childhood incident has turned them into bounty hunters. Renner and Arterton will be brother and sister.

Director Tommy Wirkola (of Dead Snow) is hoping to begin shooting the project in Berlin in March, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Arterton is believed to have landed the role ahead of the likes of Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), fellow former Bond girl Eva Green (Casino Royale) and Noomi Rapace (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) having impressed in 2010 with triple hits Tamara Drewe, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Clash of the Titans.

The only potential block now lies in scheduling, as Renner is committed to shooting his role in Marvel’s The Avengers just eight weeks after he does Paramount’s Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

If all goes to plan with those productions, Witch Hunters will squeeze in between the two.

Distributor Paramount is particularly keen for there to be no hitches as it is seeking to get the project out ahead of Fox’s forthcoming adaptation of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which director Timur Bekmambetov will begin shooting in 3D this year for a June 22, 2012 release.
