Story by Jack Foley

GEORGE Clooney is to direct and star in an adaptation of the novel Good Morning, Midnight for Netflix.

Based on Lily Brooks-Dalton’s novel of the same name, the post-apocalyptic story follows the parallel tale of Augustine (Clooney), a lonely scientist in the Arctic, as he races to make contact with the crew of the Aether spacecraft as they try to return home to Earth.

Mark L. Smith, of The Revenant fame, has adapted the screenplay, while Clooney will produce via his Smokehouse Pictures banner with regular partner Grant Heslov. A name for the film has yet to be confirmed.

But shooting is due to begin in October this year (2019).

In a statement, Clooney said: “Grant and I couldn’t be more excited to be involved with this incredible project. Mark is a writer we’ve long admired and his script is haunting. We’re thrilled to be working with our friends at Netflix as well.”

Scott Stuber, head of Netflix’s film division, added: “Having known and worked with George for over two decades, I can’t think of anyone better to bring this amazing story to life. The book is powerful and moving, and Mark’s adaptation is beautifully written. At its core, this is a story about human nature, and one that I know our global audiences will fall in love with, just like I did when I read it.”

After having taken a break from the world of film and TV – he last appeared in 2016’s Money Monster – Clooney has been getting busy recently.

He also recently appeared in, produced and directed episodes of Hulu’s series adaptation of Joseph Heller’s Catch 22, which has just started airing on Channel 4 in the UK.
