GEORGE Clooney is to produce the Meryl Streep-Julia Roberts movie August: Osage County.

Based on Tracey Letts’ acclaimed play of the same name, the film follows a dysfunctional family as they are brought back together when their poet father disappears.

In book and stage form it has won the Pulitzer and the Tony awards for best drama in 2008.

Streep and Roberts will play mother and daughter in the film. The former will play a matriarch who is addicted to prescription drugs, while Roberts will portray her eldest daughter Barbara.

As yet, no other casting has been announced but John Wells, of ER and Mildred Pierce fame, is directing. Shooting is scheduled to begin in the autumn.

In a statement, Clooney – who will produce with long-time collaborator Grant Heslov – said: “It’s such a terrific group and we feel honoured to help bring it to the screen.

“Grant and I are thrilled to work on this project… I can’t think of anyone better than Harvey [Weinstein] to put this all together,” Clooney continued.

Clooney and Heslov have previously produced films including the actor’s own The Ides of March and Good Night and Good Luck.

The play made its Broadway debut in December 2007 after premiering at Chicago’s Steepenwolf theatre earlier that year.
