Gerard Butler signs up for Olympus Has Fallen

Machine Gun Preacher

Story by Jack Foley

GERARD Butler is to play the leading role in Olympus Has Fallen, a new action thriller described as Die Hard in the White House.

The actor, who is also helping to develop the project, will reportedly play a down-on-his-luck ex-Secret Service agent who becomes America’s only hope when the White House is taken over by terrorists.

Aside from the Die Hard angle, the plot also sounds a lot like one of 24‘s storylines, which saw Jack Bauer intervene to foil a terrorist occupation of America’s most famous address.

Production on the movie is due to to start in September.

Butler has a busy year ahead of him with filming and pre-release commitments, having also completed Curtis Hanson’s surfing drama Of Men and Mavericks, Hunter Killer and Playing The Field.

He’s also set to star in the diamond-heist thriller Brilliant, which starts shooting this spring in Boston and will be lending his voice to animated sequel How To Train Your Dragon 2.

The actor was last seen alongside Ralph Fiennes in Coriolanus
