GI Joe looks set to get a three-quel

GI Joe: Retaliation

Story by Jack Foley

PARAMOUNT is moving forward with plans for a third installment in the GI Joe franchise, according to Variety.

Although no official announcement has been made yet, sources are quoted as saying that the box office success of GI Joe: Retaliation has promoted officials to green-light another movie.

Retaliation took $132 million globally over the weekend and is on course to hit $410 million world-wide by the end of its run.

It cost less to produce than its predecessor, The Rise of Cobra and is more lucrative when production costs for the two films are also taken into account.

Paramount had left many scratching their heads when it initially pulled Retaliation from a summer 2012 spot to early 2013, prompting fears that they had a potential bomb on their hands.

But director Jon M Chu worked meticulously to ensure the 3D conversion was up to scratch in the nine extra months afforded to him to get it right, while also bringing back Channing Tatum for more scenes than was initially envisaged.

The results have paid huge dividends, especially in the US where the opening figure represents the second-best domestic Easter gross behind 2010’s Clash of the Titans.
