Gnomeo & Juliet tops UK box office

GNOMEO & Juliet has topped the UK box office after taking £2.9m in its opening weekend.

The Elton John backed movie, which converts Shakespeare’s classic tale into an animated 3D family movie featuring gnomes, has proved a hit with audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Find out more

Orange BAFTA Best Movie winner The King’s Speech held onto second place after taking a further £1.9m, thereby bringing its UK total to more than £33m.

Gnomeo & Juliet was one of five new entries in the chart this week.

Other included the Coen Brothers’ new version of True Grit, which entered the chart in fourth place behind Disney holdover Tangled.

Another 3D family film, Yogi Bear 3D, came fifth while Adam Sandler-Jennifer Aniston rom-com Just Go With It (which topped the US box office over the weekend) came in sixth.

Sci-fi romantic drama Never Let Me Go, which features an all-star British cast including Keira Knightley, Andrew Garfield and Carey Mulligan, just made the top 10 – in ninth place – with a disappointing £625,000.
