GNOMES rule the US box office! Animated family film Gnomeo & Juliet has surpassed expectations to top the US box office for the first time in its third week of release.

The Elton John produced comedy, inspired by Shakespeare’s tragedy and voiced by James McAvoy and Emily Blunt, grossed an estimated $14.2 million to hold off the challenge of new release Hall Pass, starring Owen Wilson.

The Farrelly brothers’ R-rated comedy had to settle for second in its debut, with a ‘soft’ $13.4 million. It had been expected to open at least several million dollars higher.

Another of the weekend’s new starters, Nicolas Cage starrer Drive Angry 3D was deemed ‘dead on arrival’, grossing an estimated $5.1 million to come in ninth.

But the weekend belonged to Disney’s Gnomeo, whose total has now risen to $75.1 million in the US alone. It also topped the UK box office upon its release.

Of the other films on release, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never Version 2.0 – featuring 40 minutes of new footage edited in by Jon Chu – did succeed in sparking repeat business, taking an estimated $9.2 million to take sixth spot.

The US top five, meanwhile, is completed by Liam Neeson action-thriller Unknown, which came third with a further $12.4 million, Adam Sandler-Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy Just Go With It, which took $11.1 million for fourth and I Am Number Four, which took fifth with $11 million.
