Godfather prequel to be released in 2012

The Godfather

Story by Jack Foley

A PREQUEL to Mario Puzo’s The Godfather novel will be published in June 2012.

The book is based on an unproduced Puzo screenplay, entitled The Family Corleone, which occurs before the Corleones’ rise to power.

It chronicles the story of how a young Vito Corleone fought his way through New York’s criminal underworld to become the powerful “Don” introduced in The Godfather and is written by Ed Falco.

Jamie Raab, exec vp of Grand Central Publishing, told The Hollywood Reporter: “Guided by Mario Puzo’s own unproduced screenplay, Ed Falco thrillingly brings back Puzo’s classic characters.”

The novel is said to honour the original Godfather while standing on its own as a novel for a new generation of readers.

It is not yet known whether a movie version of the film will follow… although the events chronicled did form part of the basis for the flashback sequences involving Robert De Niro in The Godfather, Part II.
