Godzilla sequel to open in cinemas in summer 2018

Story by Jack Foley

A SEQUEL to Godzilla will roar its way into cinemas in the summer of 2018.

Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures announced the news on Thursday, also confirming that Gareth Edwards will return to write and direct. A US release date has been set for June 8, 2018.

As yet, no plot details have been announced and it is not yet known whether any cast members from the first film will return.

Godzilla has taken an impressive $507.7 million at the global box office since May to launch another franchise.

It marks an amazing career trajectory for British filmmaker Edwards, who was directing only his second film after the critically acclaimed but distinctly lower budget Monsters thrust him into the Hollywood spotlight.

Indeed, such is the esteem with which he is now held that Warner Bros are prepared to wait to get Edwards back while he directs a Star Wars spin-off for Disney and Lucasfilm.
