Golden Globes 2019: Vice leads movie nominations

Vice

Story by Jack Foley

VICE, a political drama starring Christian Bale as Dick Cheney, leads the nominations for the Golden Globes 2019.

The satirical biopic has six nods in all, including one for lead actor Christian Bale and another for Best motion picture – comedy or musical.

Another prominent contender is Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born, which secured five nods. Cooper himself is also nominated for his direction of and performance in the musical remake, while Lady Gaga landed a best actress nomination.

Of the British talent hoping to pick up a trophy, there was a strong female showing. Olivia Colman is also up for a best actress award for period comedy-drama The Favourite, for which co-stars Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone are also recognised.

Rosamund Pike is nominated for best actress in a film drama for her role in A Private War.

And Emily Blunt is shortlisted for playing the title role in Mary Poppins Returns – her sixth nomination, which she described as being “blown away” by and “over the moon”.

Completing that strong British line-up is Claire Foy, who is up for a supporting acting award for the Neil Armstrong biopic First Man.

Of the British men, Richard E Grant is shortlisted for literary comedy Can You Ever Forgive Me?. The actor, who plays a debauched ex-pat who becomes embroiled in a forgery scandal, said he was “astonished and stunned” to receive his first Golden Globe nomination.

Elsewhere, there were five nominations apiece for The Favourite and Green Book, while Mary Poppins Returns and Spike Lee’s BlackKklansman have four apiece.

In another breakthrough for films inspired by comic books, Marvel’s Black Panther is on the shortlist for best film drama, alongside Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, If Beale Street Could Talk, the latest film from Moonlight director Barry Jenkins, A Star is Born and BlackKklansman.

Vice, The Favourite and Mary Poppins Returns are joined in the best film musical or comedy category by Green Book and box office hit Crazy Rich Asians.

Rami Malek is nominated alongside Cooper for playing Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody.

The Golden Globes will be the first main film and TV awards of 2019 and are considered a reliable indicator of which films and performances will go on to enjoy success at the Oscars.
