Guillermo del Toro eyes new horror
Story by Jack Foley
GUILLERMO del Toro is to produce the dark Spanish-language thriller Julia’s Eyes (Los ojos de Julia) for Guillem Morales to direct.
The chiller, which stars Belen Rueda (The Orphanage) and Lluis Homar (Broken Embraces), follows the story of a woman who slowly begins to go blind while investigating the mysterious death of her twin sister.
Filming on the project is due to commence in October, and will reunite the same production team [Barcelona’s Rodar y Rodar] that was responsible for global smash The Orphanage.
Rodar also produced Morales’ debut feature film, An Uncertain Guest, which cleverly mixed fact and delusion in an Edgar Allen Poe-style account of a young man’s guilt-driven descent into delirium. It helped put the director under del Toro’s radar.
Commenting on the emotional depth of Julia’s Eyes, co-producer Joaquin Padro told Variety: ““The thriller’s an excuse to talk about a woman who overcomes her limitations; it’s a journey of self-discovery.”
The film will be shot from Julia’s point of view, thereby employing scare tactics that include panic attacks brought on by the central character’s failing sight.
Julia’s Eyes marks the latest project to be overseen by the prolific del Toro, who is currently in New Zealand prepping The Hobbit.
He has also just hand-picked Larry Fessenden to direct the US remake of The Orphanage
